Company Background

VOTANIC Limited is a technology start-up with vision in research and development of cutting-edge technology in virtual reality (VR) providing support to different communities and VR users. Founded in 2017 by a group of researchers and industrialists, VOTANIC originates from The University of Hong Kong’s decades-long research in virtual reality systems led by Dr. Henry Lau, who co-founded VOTANIC.’s subsidiary – HACTIS Limited – through the government’s TSSSU@HKU scheme in 2015.

Throughout the years, VOTANIC’s expertise in immersive VR technology and strong root in research-based innovation have bred numerous effective and cost saving solutions for Hong Kong Airport, port container terminals, government departments and institutions to upgrade their efficiency in business development, operations and enterprising training.

    Start research of the imseCAVE Virtual Reality System at The University of Hong Kong

  • 2002

    First prototype of the imseCAVE system installed at the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, the University of Hong Kong

  • 2003

    First generation of imseCAVE developed along with the first imseCAVE application, Quay Crane Simulator, for container terminal operator training

  • 2005

    imseCAVE installed at the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Logistics Engineering and Simulation of Tsinghua University

  • 2009

    New generation of imseCAVE integrated with optical motion tracking system

  • 2011

    Invention of MagicPad 3D user interface for imseCAVE

  • 2012

    Improved compact design of imseCAVE system with ultra short throw 3D projectors

    Next generation of imseCAVE with large screens and mobility design

    First public show of imseCAVE at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

    ICT Best Digital Entertainment (Interaction Design) Silver Award

    Established VOTANIC’s mainland China branch in Zhongshan, promoting virtual reality technologies and services in line with Greater Bay Area development

    Installed the first immersive virtual reality CAVE system at the Vocational Training Council in Hong Kong, providing a versatile and advanced platform for program development

    Set up a dome virtual reality system at RTHK’s “Light and Sound” exhibition commemorating 90 years of public broadcasting, revisiting Hong Kong’s television and radio history with audiences

  • 2019

    Launched vCAVE, entering the market with cost-effective, high-quality immersive experiences

    Installed Hong Kong’s first large-scale vCAVE for Diocesan Boys’ School’s 150th anniversary art exhibition to showcase digitized student artworks

    Developed Tseung Kwan O’s first vCAVE system for Haven of Hope Hospital, tailored for rehabilitation therapy

  • 2020

    Installed Asia’s largest virtual reality vCAVE system with a fully dynamic platform for the Occupational Safety and Health Council

    Collaborated with MTR Corporation to develop a multi-platform virtual reality training system for railway operations

    Installed an ultra-high-definition passive stereoscopic virtual reality vCAVE system for Hong Kong Shue Yan University

  • 2021

    Partnered with SmarTone to create Hong Kong’s first vCAVE system utilizing 5G communication

    Installed Hong Kong’s first low-energy-consumption LED vCAVE system for the Environmental Protection Department

    Designed and delivered a dedicated non-reflective back-projection laser vCAVE system for HKUSPACE Centennial College

    Collaborated with the Civil Engineering and Development Department to develop a virtual reality training system for soil nail operations

    Installed Hong Kong’s first large-scale vCAVE system for educational purposes at Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School

    The team won the 2022 Smart Living Award

    Collaborated with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Industrial Centre to create HiVE (Immersive Hybrid Reality CAVE System), the world’s first fully immersive hybrid reality classroom

    Installed the world’s first 360-degree immersive LED future cinema system for HKBU’s Visualization Research Centre

    Developed multiple virtual reality CAVE systems for education and research at Hong Kong Metropolitan University’s Digital Art Laboratory

  • 2023

    The HiVE system won an Inventions Award at the 48th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions

    Provided a newly designed 360° entertainment system for the clubhouse facilities of Henderson Land’s Mid-Levels luxury residential project

    Designed and delivered a novel cylindrical, convertible vCAVE system for ACS School, offering diverse learning experiences

    Launched XRCC, a zero-code, cross-platform XR experience creation software

  • 2024

    Developed the world’s first mobile 360-degree immersive LED cinema system for HKBU’s Visualization Research Centre, launching a global tour

    XRCC won an Inventions Award at the 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong

    Released XRCC 3.0, featuring a new interface and user experience, enabling real-time cross-platform multi-user co-creation and collaborative play

  • 2025

    XRCC won a Silver Award in the “Entertainment Design and Experience” category at the 2025 Edison Awards™
